EVACUATION
Mandatory evacuations remain in place for Piihana Road area in Wailuku due to the Piihana brush fire; however, voluntary evacuation advisories for nearby Happy Valley and Wailuku Country Estates have been lifted as of 12:32 p.m., according to Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). No other evacuations are expected at this time, officials said. Evacuees are being directed to Keopuolani Regional Park and are asked to follow directions from emergency personnel.
ROAD CLOSURE
Piihana Road in Wailuku remains closed due to the brush fire, according to Maui Police Department (MPD).
FIRE UPDATE
The Piihana brush fire is 90% contained at approximately four acres, according to Maui Fire Department (MFD). Four fires in the Piihana Farms area were reported at approximately 9:15 a.m., and shortly after the reports, Piihana Road homes were evacuated by MPD as a precaution prior to the mandatory evacuation notice at 10:55 a.m. via Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). WEA, which broadcasts via phone, TV and radio, is distinct and separate from MEMA alerts and do not require subscriptions.
RESOURCES
Throughout the incident, MFD had six engines, two tankers, fire officials and multiple private tankers responding. Air 1 was on standby.
