Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision For www.mauicounty.gov

On Thursday, July 18, 2024, at approximately 12:40 p.m., a single motor vehicle collision occurred on Pulehu Road, .2 miles southeast of Spanish Road in Kahului.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a black 2012 Harley-Davidson Switchback motorcycle was traveling northwest on Pulehu Road when the operator attempted to overtake a vehicle on a double solid yellow line. The operator lost control of the motorcycle upon failing to negotiate a left curve in the roadway and drove into bushes.

As a result of this collision, the operator, a 68-year-old Kihei male, was ejected, suffering critical life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The victim’s identity is currently being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Investigation reveals that:

The operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

The operator was wearing safety glasses at the time of the collision.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol is pending as the investigation is still ongoing.

This is Maui County’s 10th fatality of 2024, compared to seven at the same time last year.
