*Traffic incident in Moloa‘a leads to closure of Kūhiō Highway Sunday morning*

MOLOA‘A – Police responded to a two-vehicle traffic incident that occurred early Sunday morning that resulted in the closure of Kūhiō Highway in Moloa‘a near Ko‘olau Road.

On Sep. 8, at approximately 1:55 a.m., a sedan was traveling southbound on Kūhiō Highway when it rear-ended a pickup truck as the truck was attempting to make a left turn onto Ko‘olau Road.

Police and medics responded to the scene. The pickup truck was located on the northbound shoulder of the highway and was occupied by a minor driver and passenger. Both occupants were transported to the Wilcox Medical Center and later medevacked to the Queens Medical Center for further treatment.

The driver of the sedan, a minor, did not report any injuries. The driver of the sedan was detained for the offense of Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant and Negligent Injury in the First Degree and released pending further investigation.

Kūhiō Highway was closed in both directions for approximately three hours while KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Speed and impairment appear to be factors in the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to call Officer Himongala at 808-241-1617. Those wishing to remain anonymous can provide information by calling Crime Stoppers Kauaʻi at 808-246-8300, submitting a tip at cskauai.org [ http://cskauai.org/?fbclid=IwAR1VsGleC_bCca9IGuo3uawd7GGkec7QpTVUvF5vxabYHYDmEJ0yV4gBHAg&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], or through the Crime Stoppers Kauaʻi P3 Tips Mobile App.
