*KPD Commemorates National Police Week 2025*
LĪHU‘E - The Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) joins law enforcement agencies across the nation in observing National Police Week, a time to honor the selfless service of officers who protect communities every day.
During a ceremony this morning, retired Deputy Chief Michael Contrades, on behalf of Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami, officially presented a proclamation declaring May 11 to May 17, 2025, as National Police Week. County Council Chair Mel Rapozo also presented a Kaua‘i County Council certificate to honor the memory of officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
National Police Week, established by Congress in 1962, is dedicated to remembering the officers who have given their lives in the line of duty and also honors those who continue to serve. On May 15, National Peace Officers Memorial Day, the nation pauses to reflect on the sacrifices made by these officers, and to show support for the survivors they left behind.
This year, 345 fallen officers’ names will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. This includes 148 officers who lost their lives in 2024 and 197 others who passed in previous years but whose sacrifices had not yet been officially recognized.
“We stand united this week to honor the fallen and to recognize the dedication and hard work of those who protect and serve our communities every day,” said Chief Todd Raybuck. “We are deeply grateful for their service and commitment to the safety and well-being of Kaua‘i.”
Residents are encouraged to reflect on the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and to express their appreciation for the men and women who dedicate their lives to serving the community. This observance is a reminder of the extraordinary courage and commitment that law enforcement officers display in their daily lives to protect and serve others.
Ready to make a difference in your community? Recruitment for the force is ongoing. The salary for a police officer ranges from approximately $72,000 to over $118,000 and includes a robust benefits package. Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and a minimum age of 20 years. Applicants should not have any misdemeanor, felony or domestic violence convictions.
