*Bicyclist struck by vehicle on Kūhiō Highway*
KAPA‘A – Police responded to a traffic incident Wednesday evening on Kūhiō Highway in Kapa‘a.
At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25, a 2008 Toyota sedan was traveling northbound on Kūhiō Highway when it struck a 44-year-old male bicyclist. The bicyclist was crossing the highway in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Kūhiō Highway and Kawaihau Road.
The bicyclist was transported to Wilcox Medical Center and later airlifted to Queens Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. The driver of the Toyota sedan did not report any injuries.
Kūhiō Highway was closed in both directions for approximately 1.5 hours as officers with the Kauaʻi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
The investigation is ongoing. Speed does not appear to be a factor and toxicology results are pending.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to call Officer Himongala at 808-241-1617. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers Kauaʻi at 808-246-8300, submit a tip at crimestopperskauai.org [ http://crimestopperskauai.org/sitemenu.aspx?%2F=&ID=15107&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], or use the Crime Stoppers Kauaʻi P3 Tips Mobile App.
