*KCSW recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, public invited to attend sign waving event on Oct. 1*

LĪHU‘E – In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Kaua‘i Committee on the Status of Women (KCSW) will be hosting a sign waving event on Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., fronting the Kaua‘i Community College in Līhu‘e.

At the event, a pop-up tent with light refreshments will be provided along with educational resources by the American Cancer Society.

The goal of this campaign is to engage the public, foster a sense of solidarity, and encourage proactive steps towards early detection of Breast Cancer. KCSW encourages participants to wear pink as a sign of strength. A prize will be given to the most original pink outfit.

"Breast Cancer touches the lives of so many in our community," said Regina Carvalho, KCSW treasurer. “Statics tell us that Breast Cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide with 1 in 8 women in the U.S. who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. In recent years, there have been an increase in breast cancer among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. We encourage you to do monthly breast exams and regular mammograms. Early detection may give you a greater chance of survival.”

During the month of October, the historic county building will be illuminated in pink to give support to the fighters, continued strength to the survivors, honoring the taken, and to never ever give up hope.

The KCSW is part of the Hawai‘i State Commission on the Status of Women, which strives to advance the status of women and girls by acting as a catalyst for positive change through advocacy, education, collaboration, and program development. Meetings for the Kaua‘i Committee on the Status of Women are public and anyone interested in attending may view the posted agendas on the Boards and Commissions website, www.kauai.gov/boardsandcommissions [ http://www.kauai.gov/boardsandcommissions?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] under the Calendar section.
