*Apartment fire at Plantation Hale confined to kitchen on Thursday*

WAILUA – Firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire Thursday morning located in an apartment at Plantation Hale Suites in Wailua.

No injuries were reported.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to Plantation Hale Suites after receiving a call about smoke coming out from one of the rooms.

Crews from the Kapa‘a, Kaiākea, and Līhu‘e fire stations responded to the incident, along with the on-duty Battalion Chief and the Kaua‘i Fire Prevention Bureau.

Kapa‘a firefighters were first on scene and observed smoke coming from a unit on the second floor of a building but there were no alarms or signs of people in distress. Crews made a forced entry into the unit and found the apartment full of smoke from floor to ceiling. The fire was located in the kitchen and personnel used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. There were no occupants in the unit during their response.

Although the fire was extinguished, smoke had filled the room and hallways of the building. Fire officials evacuated the building as a precaution while they turned off power and continued to search adjacent apartments for fire extension. After finding no signs of fire extension, crews continued to ventilate the building until inspectors from the Kaua‘i Fire Prevention Bureau arrived and took over the scene.

Fire inspectors estimate damages to the structure and its contents to be approximately $35,000.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental.
