MEMA EMERGENCY ADVISORY LIFTED

Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) issued an informational message 6:57 tonight, July 13, 2024, that LIFTS the Crater Road Fire emergency advisory sent at 4:11 p.m. July 12. Due to improving conditions, County of Maui officials tonight LIFTED the advisory that had been issued for residents above Kekaulike and Haleakala highways between Upper Kimo and Waipoli roads. Although evacuations are NOT expected, residents are asked to continue to monitor radio, TV and mobile devices for official information. With the advisory lifted, this will be the final update for today; however, Maui Fire Department (MFD) and MEMA are monitoring the fire around the clock. If conditions change, notifications will be issued.

FIRE UPDATE

Lighter winds helped firefighting efforts today and MFD estimates the blaze is 70% contained at 550 acres as of 7 p.m. tonight. Water from air and ground assets helped suppress the fire, along with the work of county, state and federal hand crews. Eight dozers were cutting fire line to help containment, and a contingency dozer line several miles long now flanks the residential side. Any smoldering materials are well within the fire perimeter. While air, state and federal crews have demobilized for the day, MFD will keep a command element, drone operators, one engine and one tanker onsite overnight. Thermal drone will fly overnight missions. No injuries or structural damages have been reported due to the fire.

RESPONSE

MFD will keep a command element, drone operators, one engine and one tanker onsite overnight; MEMA will be monitoring overnight.

CLOSURES

Crater Road and Haleakala National Park remain closed. State DLNR DOFAW closed the Kula Forest Reserve and all Na Ala Hele Trails in the reserve at 3 p.m. 7/12 until further notice as a precautionary measure.

WATER INFORMATION

The Crater Road fire is far uphill relative to the County Department of Water Supply water system, and there are no current concerns over the safety of the Upcountry drinking water, according to County Water Supply Director John Stufflebean. However, DWS is prepared to respond should the system be threatened.

PRECAUTIONARY SHELTER

Although no evacuation orders have been given, MEMA opened King Kekaulike High School gymnasium as a temporary shelter from 3 a.m. until 2 p.m. today, when it closed and went into standby mode. The shelter can open within minutes if evacuation orders are given.

MEMA CALL LINE

MEMA’s emergency call line for Crater Road Fire area residents closed at 6:57 tonight when the advisory lifted.

BACKGROUND

MFD reported the Crater Road fire at about 6:13 p.m. 7/10. MEMA’s Emergency Operations Center was partially activated at 8:02 p.m. 7/10 in response to the fire. Mayor Richard Bissen signed an Emergency Proclamation at 7:20 a.m. 7/11 in response to the ongoing fire, which authorizes the County to access federal assistance programs for individuals and public infrastructure, including funds for emergency response efforts to ensure continued and effective countywide response.
