*KPD officers recognized for life-saving intervention*

LĪHUʻE – Sergeant Mike Nii and Officer Nicholas Kam were honored at the Kaua‘i Police Commission meeting on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, for their extraordinary professionalism, composure, and life-saving actions during a medical emergency.

On Dec. 12, 2024, Sgt. Nii and Officer Kam responded to a report of a driver who was unconscious in a vehicle on Kapule Highway. The vehicle had drifted into the opposite lane and come to a stop against the embankment, still in gear. Upon arrival, Sgt. Nii found the driver unresponsive and immediately began performing CPR. Officer Kam arrived shortly thereafter with his KPD-issued Automated External Defibrillator (AED), assessed the driver’s pulse, and delivered a life-saving shock. Sgt. Nii resumed CPR until fire and medical personnel arrived to take over care.

“Today, we honor the bravery and selflessness of these officers, who went above and beyond to save a life. Their quick actions, dedication, and commitment to protecting our community exemplify the very best of what it means to serve,” said Chief Todd Raybuck. “Their teamwork and adherence to emergency protocols were crucial in giving the individual the best chance for survival.”

In recognition of their outstanding performance and life-saving efforts, Sgt. Nii and Officer Kam were awarded the Life Saving Medal, an award presented to individuals who demonstrate extraordinary bravery and selflessness by attempting to save a life.
