**Friday morning *

KALALAU – The Kaua‘i Fire Department responded Thursday morning to reports of multiple hikers stranded on the far side of Hanakāpī‘ai Stream on the Kalalau Trail, after heavy stream flow made crossing unsafe.

“We strongly advise all hikers to avoid entering trail systems when inclement weather is in the forecast. Flooding in stream areas can occur rapidly and without warning, putting lives at risk,” said Kaua‘i Fire Department Chief Michael Gibson. “We thank all the first responders and partner agencies who ensured that all the hikers made it out safely Friday morning.”

Officials advise day hikers to bring emergency supplies in case they need to shelter in place overnight due to weather conditions. State officials confirmed that about 50 individuals made it out of the trail on Friday morning.

No injuries have been reported.

Shortly before 11:55 a.m. on April 3, Hanalei Fire Station personnel were dispatched following a report from the on-duty Battalion Chief that a large group of individuals were stranded along the Kalalau Trail. Rescue personnel hiked in to assess conditions and provide support. Personnel arrived on scene at approximately 2:25 p.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed that approximately 50 people were unable to safely cross due to high stream levels. No medical attention was required. Hikers were advised to shelter in place and wait for water levels to recede before attempting to cross.

Crews with the Department of Land and Natural Resources remained on scene with KFD personnel on standby.

Earlier that day, shortly before 9:35 a.m., the National Weather Service issued a Flood Advisory for the north shore of Kaua‘i, including the Hanakāpī‘ai area. The advisory remained in effect until 12:30 p.m., warning of heavy rains and potential flash flooding in streams and low-lying areas.

Due to today’s weather forecast and ongoing safety concerns, state officials closed the Kalalau Trail today, April 4.

Wet weather is expected to continue across Kaua‘i through the weekend, according to forecasts with NWS.
