*KPD detective recognized for persistence in homicide case *

LĪHUʻE – Detective Lucas Hamberg was honored at the Kaua‘i Police Commission meeting on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, for his outstanding dedication, professionalism, and contributions to ensuring community safety.

As the lead investigator in a homicide case that began on Jan. 12, 2024, when a body was found inside a burned vehicle at Anahola Beach Park, Detective Hamberg demonstrated exceptional investigative and leadership skills. He worked closely with his team and law enforcement partners, meticulously gathering evidence and pursuing every lead over the course of a year to track down the suspect.

Through his relentless persistence, Detective Hamberg achieved a breakthrough in the case that ultimately led to the identification and arrest of the suspect. His efforts resulted in a Grand Jury indictment of the suspect for Murder in the Second Degree, First-Degree Arson, and Abuse of a Corpse. Detective Hamberg’s diligence not only ensured justice for the victim but also provided much-needed closure to the victim’s family.

“Detective Hamberg’s outstanding work on this case is just one example of his selfless dedication to our community,” stated Assistant Chief Kalani Ke. “This investigation was very complex, demanding long hours that often meant time away from loved ones. Mahalo to Detective Hamberg and his ‘ohana - their sacrifices and support make his work not only possible, but impactful.”

In recognition of his contributions to public safety, Detective Hamberg was named Employee of the Month for February 2025. His work continues to inspire colleagues and reinforces KPD’s mission to protect and serve the community with perseverance.
