*Multiagency search suspended for missing Līhu‘e man in waters off Nukoli‘i Beach in Wailua*

WAILUA – A three-day multiagency search has been suspended Tuesday evening for a missing Kaua‘i man in waters off Nukoli‘i Beach in Wailua.

The Kaua‘i Police Department has identified the missing person as Gary Gushiken, 50, of Līhu‘e.

“Our hearts go out to Gary’s family, friends, and loved ones,” said KPD Assistant Chief Mark Ozaki. “We truly appreciate all our search partners involved these past three days.”

“We are grateful for everyone's efforts in the search for Gary, especially during the elevated surf and high wind conditions,” said Fire Chief Michael Gibson. “Our deepest condolences go out to his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Personnel with the Kaua‘i Police Department, Kaua‘i Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Ocean Safety Bureau, Kaua‘i Search and Rescue, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, and the on-duty KFD Battalion Chief responded to the incident.

According to a preliminary report, Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a missing snorkeler at Nukoli‘i Beach on Saturday, Aug. 24, at approximately 6:40 p.m.

The man was about 100 yards offshore when he was separated from his party and went missing. Air, land, and sea searches were conducted through Tuesday evening.

Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, offered support to the missing person’s family.
