*KPD officer recognized for life-saving response*

LĪHUʻE – An officer was honored at the Kaua‘i Police Commission meeting on Friday, Oct. 25, in recognition of her outstanding service.

Officer Serenity Kalama was recognized for her role in saving the lives of two community members on Aug. 7, 2024. At approximately 7:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in Līhu‘e following a report of two unconscious individuals found by a relative. The first to arrive at the scene, Officer Kalama discovered an adult female lying motionless on the floor and an adult male unresponsive on a nearby bed. Recognizing the critical signs of an opioid overdose, Officer Kalama swiftly administered Naloxone (Narcan) to both individuals. Her prompt actions successfully revived them, allowing emergency personnel to provide the necessary medical assistance. Both individuals were subsequently transported to the Wilcox Medical Center for further treatment.

Chief Todd Raybuck commended Officer Kalama for her exemplary response, stating, “Officer Kalama showed incredible poise during a very challenging situation. Her actions were remarkable not only for their immediate intervention, but because it gave these individuals a second chance at life with their loved ones. In that moment, she wasn’t just a police officer; she was a lifeline.”

If this story inspires you and you’re ready to make a meaningful impact in your community, consider joining the KPD ‘ohana. Recruitment for the force is ongoing.
