*Stepping into service: KPD welcomes the 100th Police Academy recruits to its ranks*

LĪHUʻE – Six officers stepped into service today after graduating from the Kaua‘i Police Department’s 100th police recruit class on Thursday, Jun. 6 at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center.

Lawrence Defontorum, Kasen Delos Reyes, Myles Mendoza, Brian Nono, Kaimani Tecson, and Matthew VanAken took their Oath of Office, officially joining the ranks of those who protect and serve the people of Kaua‘i. The ceremony, attended by family, friends, and fellow officers, was a momentous occasion as the new officers were presented with their badges.

“To each graduate, know this: in every interaction, every decision, you hold the power to make a positive difference,” Chief of Police Todd Raybuck addressed the new officers. “Today marks not just a culmination of training, but the beginning of a journey where your dedication, compassion, and integrity will shape lives. Congratulations, and embrace the profound impact you're destined to make."

Each member of the 100th class brings a unique set of skills, experiences, and perspectives to the force, further enriching the diversity of the Kaua‘i Police Department and poised to make meaningful contributions to the community. This graduation ceremony marks the culmination of six months of comprehensive classroom instruction and real-world scenarios. Following graduation, each officer is paired with a seasoned field training officer for a six-month shadowing period.

Guest speakers during the ceremony included Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami and Police Chaplain Jade Wai‘ale‘ale Battad.

Be a part of the next Police Academy class! Recruitment for the force is ongoing. The salary for a police officer ranges from approximately $72,000 to over $118,000 and includes a robust benefit package.
