*Injured hiker rescued on Nounou East Trail Saturday*

WAILUA — Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters rescued a 78-year-old visitor from Alaska on the Nounou East Trail, also known as the Sleeping Giant Trail, in Wailua on Saturday, Feb. 8.

First responders received a report of a distressed hiker shortly after 12:15 p.m.

Personnel with the Kapa‘a Fire Station and Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 responded to the incident.

According to a preliminary report, the hiker collapsed on the trail and stopped breathing. Good Samaritans administered CPR on the visitor, who later regained consciousness. First responders arrived on the scene and discovered the injured hiker near the top of the Sleeping Giant Mountain.

Rescuers loaded the Alaska visitor into a stokes litter and later into Air 1. The man was transported to a landing zone in Wailua Houselots Park to awaiting personnel with American Medical Response.

 AMR personnel continued advanced life support treatment on the hiker before transporting him to Wilcox Medical Center.

The scene was cleared shortly after 1:35 p.m.
