I used to buy a SIM card and replace it when I arrived in Japan, but now I use a Wi-Fi router exclusively ！ I can use not only my cell phone but also my computer and tablet together.
It is much cheaper to rent a router in Japan than in Hawaii, so
I make reservations to rent one at the airport on my arrival day, or
I have it sent to my parents' house.
When I returned to Japan last month, it cost about ¥ 5800 for 8 weeks ！.

I haven't used a SIM card yet, it is set to Sim Locked, so if I want to use a Sim card,

I will have to have my cell company set it to unlocked, right?

If I have a contract with T-Mobile, does that mean I can use it in Japan ？
When I arrive in Japan, will I see the Japanese carrier （ for example soft bank, etc.．
I have no problem at home with wifi, but if I can use my cell phone to do research when I am out of the country without a wifi router,
I would be very grateful.

Hello. When I returned to Japan a few years ago,
I was able to connect to Softbank with Tmobile so I didn't have to rent a router
.
You might want to check with your local Tmobile store to see if they still offer the same service
.

I recommend a cheap SIM called Google Fi （ They use T-mobile's signal in Hawaii ）. Here is a referral link.

I was a T-mobile user for many years because it was easy to use in Japan and overseas, but I'm glad I switched. eSIM is also available so you can switch online. The basic plan is $ 20/month ＋ $ 10/GB, but in my case I use Wifi a lot, so $ 40 ～ 50 per month for one person. There are other plans available if you use more data. The best part is that I can use my high speed data in other countries like Japan for the same price ＆ data plan without having to do anything. In Japan, when I was back this month, they changed to Softbank signal.

For example, if you use 3GB this month in Hawaii and then use 3GB in Japan in the middle of the month, you would be charged the same rate for a total of 6GB. I don't see or hear many ads for Google Fi in Hawaii, so when I learned about it last year, I wished I had known about it earlier ・ ・ ・ ！

By the way, I use dual SIM and Rakuten Mobile in Japan with the same phone. I also use Rakuten Mobile in Japan, but the signal is very bad, so when I switch to Google Fi signal at those times, I was comfortable with Softbank. If you are in Hawaii a lot, Rakuten Mobile is also recommended to have a Japanese cell phone number because you will not be charged for the months you do not use it, Google Fi alone or Google Fi + Rakuten combination is the best for Japanese in the US, but I think all the companies are changing their plans due to competition. I am a T-Mobile user and I am temporarily back in Japan.
To sum up, if you are just on the go and check LINE or email, I don't think you need a Wi-Fi router.
However, it's very slow😅It takes a long time to open normal news sites, and you can't watch videos on Youtube.
I don't want to be frustrated when I'm out of town, so I apply for a Wi-Fi router rental before each departure and have it delivered to my parents' house on the day of arrival.
