Maybe you misunderstood
that staying outside the US for more than a year is considered renouncing your permanent residence status
.

I have never been outside the US since I got my GC in 2020.
However, I was not told by my lawyer that I should not leave the US within a year of obtaining the GC.

Back in 2012, I went outside the US several times within a year of getting my GC and had no problems. The line at immigration is the same as for citizens, and I remember being very impressed with how smoothly I was able to get through the immigration process. Especially since I had been on AOS status for over 5 years before that, so I had to get a travel permit every year and always went to a separate room … I'm in the process of renewing my GC, and it's easy and helpful to be able to do it online now.
